Martin Dislar
Martin Disler is a South African born artist and sculptor whose practice emerges from a life shaped by movement, creativity, and a fluid crossing of disciplinary boundaries. Raised in Zimbabwe and educated in architecture at the University of KwaZulu Natal and the Architectural Association in London, Martin spent over three decades in the UK leading successful ventures in architecture, product design, and fashion. Upon his return to South Africa in 2014, he turned his focus fully to art and sculpture, a natural evolution that brings together his lifelong exploration of form, material, and concept.
Martin's work is grounded in a desire to dissolve traditional distinctions between art, design, and architecture. His sculptural figures often explore the interplay between the tangible and intangible, the physical and the digital, suggesting alternative futures where humanity and technology are not at odds but exist in harmony. These works inhabit a new sacred landscape, one that invites reflection on our shifting identities and evolving civilizations.
Working primarily with clay and beeswax, Martin sculpts intuitively with his hands before casting in bronze or resin. This tactile and elemental process links his practice to the ancient lineage of sculpture while engaging deeply with contemporary questions. His work carries the weight of history and the pulse of the future, referencing thousands of years of artistic tradition while imagining new ways of being in the world.
For Martin, sculpture is not just an object but a dialogue between time, technology, and the human spirit. His practice invites viewers to consider transformation—of self, society, and the structures we inhabit—and to find meaning in the spaces between what we know and what is still emerging
