Jacques Dhont
My work is an ongoing dialogue between the natural world and the human psyche, bound together by the physical act of weaving. Living and working within the South African landscape, I harvest black wattle bark—an invasive alien species—and transform it from an ecological disruptor into a structural skin. This raw, organic medium carries an inherent history of survival, tension, and texture, allowing me to build forms from the outside in.
I create figures that exist somewhere between the ancient and the modern, the human and the beast. By combining woven bark with found objects like bone, wire, and stone, I explore the vulnerabilities of the body and the environment in the Anthropocene. Ultimately, these sculptures are physical manifestations of psychological states—capturing concepts of blind ambition, deconstruction, and the delicate, fraying boundary between humanity and nature.
