Nicolaas Roos
Nicolaas Roos draws inspiration from Eastern philosophy, personal introspection, and an ongoing exploration of diverse artistic media. His paintings are lyrical, atmospheric, and ethereal, yet grounded in serenity. Favoring broad, expressive brushwork over detailed realism, he allows the texture and movement of paint to guide each composition.
A lifelong connection to classical music and a deep affinity for oil as a medium often lend a contemplative, melancholic tone to his work. As an avid scuba diver with a profound respect for the sea, Roos is influenced by the depth and mystery of the ocean, which translates into bold contrasts and emotionally resonant imagery.
Though painting was not his initial professional path, Roos’s academic background in theology, philosophy, and clinical psychology—alongside a strong interest in science, astronomy, geology, and history—provides a rich intellectual framework for his artistic expression. These influences shape both the thematic and emotional layers of his work.
Mindfulness is a cornerstone of his practice. Through daily rituals and quiet reflection, Roos nurtures an attentive, nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment, which he channels directly into his creative process.
He believes that each painting should speak for itself, inviting viewers to connect on a personal level without the need for extensive explanation. His art offers a space for contemplation, emotion, and stillness.
