Lungisa Kala

Lungisa Kala has garnered extensive experience in the field of sculpture over the years, collaborating with diverse artists and contributing to teams engaged in the creation of pieces spanning from 40cm sculptures to life-sized and monumental statues reaching up to 9 meters. His portfolio includes the crafting of miniature sets for television commercials and significant commissions such as contributions to the National Heritage Monument’s ‘Long March to Freedom’ installation, the completion of a life-sized statue of Josiah Gumede, the sculpting of a maquette of Joe Slovo, the creation of two original sculptures for ‘Nguni Gold’, and involvement in the construction of the 6-meter statue of Nelson Mandela alongside Tania Lee.

Reverend Professor Peter Storey once remarked on Lungisa's exceptional talent, stating, “I recently met a young man called Lungisa Kala, a finisher and polisher in a bronze factory, but his real calling is to be a sculptor. I’ve watched him fashion a remarkable likeness of the late Rev Seth Mokitimi for our new Seminary and asked him if he enjoyed what he was doing. ‘Too much,’ he said, ‘too much!’ That’s call.”

Driven by a profound ambition, Lungisa aspires to develop his own series of sculptures, with his current focus directed towards crafting a collection of small bronzes inspired by wildlife and childhood memories of rural life in the Western Cape. He emphasizes the importance of faith, self-belief, determination, vision, hard work, and dedication in achieving his dreams.

In addition to his craftsmanship, Lungisa has acquired diverse technical skills, including welding, smooth-polishing, grinding, ceramics, and mold-making during his tenure at Bronze Age. He has pursued further education, completing courses in welding, tool and die-making, and obtaining various certificates and diplomas in Entrepreneurship, Business Management, and Computer Practice.
